House Indlovu
OVERVIEW
House Indlovu has two open-plan apartments: Apartment Maya Our larger open-plan sea view apartment, Maya, is perfect for those who appreciate a bit more space, just 200m from the magnificent coastal path, where you can spread out while enjoying gorgeous sea views that Vermont is famous for. This detached unit gives you complete privacy with a generous open-plan layout, featuring an ocean-view bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and a spacious four-person dining table perfect for lingering meals or remote work. Maya is where space meets comfort. Apartment Mignon Just one road back from the Atlantic, our charming open-plan hideaway, Mignon, offers stunning sea views from your bedroom window, where you can wake to the gentle sounds of distant waves. This completely detached apartment provides complete privacy with dreamy ocean views, an ensuite bathroom, and a snug lounge area perfect for sipping local wine after beach adventures. Located just 200m from incredible rock pools and the gorgeous coastal path, Mignon is our cosy retreat. If you wondered about the name of the house, it means "Elephant" in Zulu. The house chose its own name - when we started building our dream house in 2023, while digging a hole in the back garden under the Milkwood trees, we uncovered a large bone, which we presumed was a whale bone, given the proximity to the sea. However, after some research and enquiries, the African Elephant Research Unit in Knysna confirmed that it was a pelvic bone of an African Elephant that had been here for hundreds of years! We immediately knew that we had to honour the Elephant that chose our backyard as its last resting place. The Bone now enjoys a prominent position above the front door. The two apartments are separate from the main house and were designed with privacy in mind and built for short-term rental. It's a cosy retreat designed to make you feel right at home from the moment you step through the door.
AREA INFORMATION
Vermont is a tranquil coastal suburb of Hermanus, situated between the Onrust River and the Hoek-van-die-Berg Nature Reserve. It is primarily a residential and holiday destination known for its green belts, diverse birdlife, and the Brekfis Bay beach, which offers a secluded spot for swimming and picnics. The area features a popular coastal path for walking and is adjacent to the Vermont Salt Pan, a protected wetland that attracts large populations of greater flamingos. While it offers a quiet, conservancy-focused lifestyle, it remains conveniently located just 10 km from the Hermanus town centre and within easy reach of the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley.
ATTRACTIONS
* Vermont is essentially a massive nature conservancy, so the attractions here are all about the outdoors and the "Champagne air." * Vermont Salt Pan: This is the crown jewel of the area for birdwatchers. Depending on the season and water levels, you can see hundreds of Greater and Lesser Flamingos wading in the shallow waters against the backdrop of the Onrus mountains. * Brekfis Bay (Breakfast Bay): A hidden gem tucked away behind high dunes. It's a sheltered, white-sand beach perfect for a quiet morning picnic or a dip in the ocean. It's much more secluded than the main Hermanus beaches. * The Vermont Coastal Path: This scenic trail meanders along the rocky shoreline and fynbos-covered dunes. It connects Vermont to Onrus and is great for a flat, easy walk with plenty of benches to sit and whale watch (in season). * Jan Rabie Tidal Pool: Located at the end of the coastal path, this is a popular spot for a safe, refreshing swim in the ocean without having to worry about the currents. * Hoek-van-die-Berg Nature Reserve: On the western edge of Vermont, this private reserve offers beautiful hiking trails through pristine coastal fynbos. It's incredibly quiet and a great place to spot small antelope or mongooses. * Green Belts: About 20% of Vermont is dedicated to "green corridors." You can wander through these natural pathways that run between the houses, connecting the mountain to the sea, often seeing tortoises and diverse birdlife along the way. * Brood The best Sourdough bakery in the heart of the neighbourhood! Go there for coffee to meet the locals and feel at home. Try their cheese sticks and other pastries. Good Coffee. * Plato Coffee Newly opened in Onrus and known for its extensive list of coffee drinks. Highly trained baristas. * Oscars (Hermanus) The most popular coffee shop in Hermanus that also sells the best freshly bakes ciabatta. * Dutchies (Hermanus) The iconic Dutch restaurant on Grotto Beach. Serves delicious food and drinks.
