Wilderness is a charming seaside town located along South Africa’s famous Garden Route in the southern Cape. Positioned just east of the city of George, it sits along the N2 highway, just beyond the scenic Kaaiman's River Pass. The surrounding area is also of scientific interest, having provided important palaeoclimatological insights into South Africa’s prehistoric climate. Sediment core samples from Eilandvlei, a nearby coastal lake, reveal that the region experienced drier conditions between approximately 8,900–7,900 years ago and again from 6,400–3,000 years ago. In contrast, the period from 7,900 to 6,400 years ago was relatively wetter, with a climate resembling that of the present day.
