Overview

Africlassic Guest House – Harrismith is nestled at the foothills of Platberg mountain in the scenic Drakensberg Highlands Area. The property offers comfortable guest rooms and self-catering accommodation and is an ideal base to explore the area's attractions and facilities. Accommodation comprises 5 individually decorated rooms, one of which offers a self-catering kitchenette. Each room features a private bathroom and contains a TV with selected DStv and OpenView channels, a work desk, a portable fan, a portable heater, and free Wi-Fi access. The dramatic vibrant colours of our Poikie Restaurant with the century-old black pot chandeliers, nostalgic bicycles and tin cans, invite you to the unique tastes of traditional African three-legged potjie meals. The guest house has 1 meeting and events venue which can cater to up to 16 people who need a space for small conferences and business meetings. Guests are welcome to make use of the boma braai area, the garden gym and chess board, or the reading room. Secure parking is available with 24-hour CCTV surveillance on-site. Wake up to the sound of birds chirping and the fresh air of the garden and river environment. The decoration is pure, authentic African and presented in a sleek and contemporary manner. Cultural and natural elements have been merged in rhythmic harmony with strong interplays between various natural elements. The dramatic scenery from the garden on Platberg Mountain sets the scene for a truly remarkable experience.

A rather charming example of a typical Free State town, Harrismith is probably best known by South Africans as the ‘halfway house’ - halfway, that is, between Durban and Johannesburg. For years it has served as the midway stop to tank up both on fuel and food. Suffice it to say that Harrismith has remained in obscurity pretty much until recently. Harrismith lies just off the N3, roughly 314 kilometres from Johannesburg and 315 kilometres from Durban, and the N5 from Bethlehem comes to an end in the middle of the town, which serves as the centre of one of the five wool-producing districts in the country. The town hall in Harrismith, a national monument, is a graceful sandstone and brick building built in 1907. This and the Harrismith Wildflower Gardens, founded in 1967 as a botanical garden, with some fine examples of the Drakensberg region’s flora and a wonderful picnic spot, are reason enough to visit Harrismith. The town also serves as something of a gateway into the Drakensberg Mountains and people use Harrismith to stock up on last-minute items or to make speedy reconnaissance trips for dwindling supplies.
