The Cape West Coast is a unique cultural experience with a proud heritage and comprises of five districts, Matzikama, Cederberg, Bergrivier, Swartland and Saldana. The picturesque town of Langebaan in the Saldanha district is the playground of the Cape West Coast Peninsula, and natural water sport haven, within an hours’ drive from Cape Town. It's sandy beaches and calm waters borders the West Coast National Park and boast restaurants and accommodation on the banks of the Lagoon. These waters are well known as a paradise for bird watchers and is also the place where “Eve’s Footprint” was discovered. Our ancient history can further be explored at the Fossil Park just outside of town where the fossils of bears, sabre tooth cats, short necked giraffes and many other exotic animals, which inhabited the West Coast some 5 million years ago, can be viewed. Langebaan these days is a far cry from the days when the biggest whaling station in the southern hemisphere was located here. It offers easy access to major industrial developments in the West Coast, be it our wind farms and solar powered infrastructure investments, deep-water port and ore terminal in Saldanha, mining activities from limestone, diamonds, kaolin and phosphate from processing to transport sectors. Fishing has been a part of life on the West Coast for centuries and our farmers contribute with a wide variety towards agricultural income.
