The charming little town of Parys lies on the southern banks of the Vaal River in the Free State Province about an hour’s drive from Johannesburg.
Disputably named after its European counterpart Paris on the banks of River Seine, and translated into Afrikaans language - Parys by a German surveyor named Schilbach who had participated in the Siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War and the location next to the Vaal reminded him of Paris on the River Seine.
There are two townships in Parys named Tumahole and Schonkenville.
What makes Parys more interesting to visit is that it is situated within the Vredefort Dome Area - the place of the oldest and largest meteorite impact site in the world.
If you’re here for fun and leisure, then you have come to the right place where everything is literally within a 500 m and 30 km radius.
