Bloemfontein, meaning “fountain of flowers" in Dutch, is the commercial capital of the Free State, and one of the three national capitals of South Africa. Nature lovers will enjoy visiting the beautiful Botanical Gardens, which is the only one of its kind in the Free State, as well as the State President Swart Park and King’s Park and Zoo. A trip to the Naval Hill & Franklin Reserve is a must. The flat-topped hill affords an unrivalled view over Bloemfontein, while the plains boast a variety of giraffes, springbuck, ostriches, and buffalo roaming freely. The White Horse monument makes for great photography, contrasting against the slopes of the hill. It was constructed during the Anglo-Boer War as a landmark for horsemen coming in from the plains. Loch Logan Waterfront forms the entertainment hub of Bloemfontein. It includes rugby, cricket, and athletics stadiums, as well as several shops, movie theatres, and restaurants in a tranquil setting.
